Fancy yourself an adventurer? Want to go on a free expedition? Then come up with a great idea for an expedition and apply for the BBC’s Journey of a Lifetime Grant! This is one of the best free travel opportunities I have ever seen. Travelers will be expected to come up with a unique way to visit an exotic place and prepare a series of radio shows for BBC listeners. You’d be expected to keep an audio diary and submit it with notes and picture to be turned into a professional radio program. What a way to break into free travel writing! Plenty of well known adventure travelers have gotten their start on programs like this. You could be the next Bear Grylls or Rick Steves
Free travelers take note – the grant is for £4000 or approximately $8000! Think of all the cool places you could travel for free to with that kind of money. Past winners have traveled for free to Mongolia with cowboys, run away to the Mexican circus, and visited Africa. Where would you like to travel for your next free adventure?
Don’t think that many opportunities to travel for free like this exist! Especially in these challenging economic times many previous expedition funding sources have dried up, leaving travelers hunting for other ways to fund their free travels. Keeping to a travel budget is a great skill to learn when trying to travel on the cheap. $8000 may seem like a ton of money, but you’ll have to cover your free airfare, free hotels, free train travel, free food, as well as shop for free travel gear. If you can keep to a budget, you might have money left over for your next free travel adventure! (Don’t forget to pack duffle bags!)
Applications for 2009 are closed, but the next round will be opening soon so start putting together your adventure travel ideas to take advantage of this great opportunity to travel for free. For more free travel tips, check out our other posts.
