Since we just can’t get enough of free travel and want to give you plenty of information about traveling for free, here’s another post to get you going.

Free Travel Through Freelance travel writing

Have a knack for the written word? Blogs, magazines, and newspapers all over the world are looking for interesting stories and fresh perspectives. While it’s not easy to find a paid gig for writing, many travelers are able to go traveling for free while writing about their experiences. Travelers wanting to take advantage of this free travel experience would want to start by chronicling their own hometown for visitors and starting a blog about their travels. Once you’d gotten the hang of travel writing, begin contacting blogs and offering to guest post about some aspect of traveling – maybe traveling for free? Once you’ve built a small portfolio of good travel writing pieces, start searching places like the Matador Network’s Bounty Board for article requests and submit a proposal. Most new writers can expect to be paid $25 or so per post or article. Once you’ve begun to master the art of professional writing, start sending pieces to larger news organizations and networking with other writers. Soon you’ll be traveling for free as a freelance travel writer!

Travel for Free on Holiday Cruises and Cargo Ships

This great tip was told to me by a great friend with oodles of experience at traveling for free worldwide. See – commercial ships have to have a certain number of crew on board certified in first aid procedures for insurance reasons. If you want to travel at sea for free, getting certified as a Red Cross First Aid instructor is a great way to do it. It will generally cost you about $200 to complete the course, but scholarships are often available. You can also ask the Red Cross to subsidize the course in exchange for teaching future classes. Once you’ve been certified, begin contacting cruise lines and commercial cargo carriers and offering your services in exchange for free travel. It helps to be able to provide a dummy and some basic materials for crewmembers to learn on. These skills are also very valuable at holiday resorts, adventure travel tour companies, and dive resorts where staff are required to keep their first aid skills up to date. Don’t be afraid to offer to trade classes in exchange for free lodging and amenities when you’re trying to get some free hotel stays or free adventure travel. Travel for free and contribute valuable skills!
